Advent is a busy season. There is shopping, baking, decorating, partying, hosting, etc. We hosted our first of many gatherings last night. 31 young adults from our church came to our house for a bit of Christmas fun. And it was fun! We ate good food, drank 10 liters of hot apple cider (a first for many!), ate chocolates and fudgy brownies and enjoyed one another's company. We laughed our way through a white elephant gift exchange, again, a first for many, took a Christmas quiz and pondered the meaning of Advent. I'm so thankful for this group. Doug did all the food and cleaned up so I was so grateful for his energy and engagement in the kitchen! Tomorrow we host our board, Friday, the teens. So there is no shortage of things to do!
But tonight was a free night so after we got home from work we sat down together in our home office, lit the first candle of advent, enjoyed a glass of wine and relaxed in the coziness of the candlelight. We were so thankful for this quiet moment in the midst of the barrage of activity that is coming at us at fairly rapid pace these days. It was refreshing and renewing.
In the midst of this demanding season, we must all find ways to enjoy the coziness of Advent. God is eager to draw near to us, to connect with us, to share quiet moments with us. Perhaps the bigger question is simply this: Are we willing to create space to draw near to God, to connect with God, to share quiet moments with Him? Life is busy, but find the quiet, enjoy the cozy, sit in the presence of God and enjoy the peace that his presence brings...even if it's only for 5 minutes!
